[edit]Calque of German Treibmittel, equivalent to driva (“drive”) + medel (“means, medium”). Attested since 1874.

Usage notes
[edit]Typically used for liquid fuels, such as gasoline or diesel, that power vehicles. For other kinds of fuel, the word bränsle is more frequently used instead.
