Borrowed from German Engerling, from Middle High German engerlinc, from Old High German engiring (10th c.), diminutive of angar (large larva) (compare modern dialectal German Anger, Inger), from Proto-Germanic *angaraz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂engʷʰ-ir-.
