Inherited from Ottoman Turkish غیری (gayri), from the third-person singular possessive form of غیر (gayr, another), from Arabic غَيْر (ḡayr). Compare Azerbaijani qeyri, Turkmen gaýry, Uzbek gʻayri.

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish غیری (gayrî), from Arabic غَيْرِيّ (ḡayriyy). By surface analysis, gayr +‎ -i (nisba suffix). Cognate with Azerbaijani qeyri, Turkmen gaýry, Uyghur غەيرىي (gheyriy), Uzbek gʻayri.
