From Proto-Germanic *gaþinhaną, equivalent to ġe- +‎ þēon. Cognate with Old Saxon githīhan, Old High German gidīhan (German gedeihen), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌸𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (gaþeihan).
