From Ottoman Turkish گبرمك (gebermek), likely from Old Turkic [script needed] (kapar-, to swell) (by association with the swelling of decomposing corpses); if so, a doublet of kabarmak (to swell) and related to gebe (pregnant), göbek (navel).
