Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Germanic *gahaitaną (“to promise”), equivalent to ġe- + hātan. Cognate with Old Saxon gihêtan, Old High German giheizan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (gahaitan).
