From Proto-Albanian *serpena, from Proto-Indo-European *serp-en-o-s, from the root *serp- (to crawl). Compare with Latin serpens, Ancient Greek ἑρπετόν (herpetón) and Sanskrit सर्प (sarpá).[1]
