Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic рꙑльць (rylĭcĭ), from Proto-Slavic *rylьcь, from *ryti (to dig) +‎ *-ьcь (forms agent nouns). Cognates include Polish rylec (stylus), Slovene rilec.
