Possibly from Proto-Oceanic *qulu, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qulu, from Proto-Austronesian *qulu, though the medial d is unexpected. Compare Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *puntuk, from Proto-Austronesian *-tuk.
