Inherited from Latin īnflātiōnem, and therefore a doublet of inflação, a later borrowing. By surface analysis, inchar +‎ -ção. Compare Spanish hinchazón, Italian enfiagione, dialectal French enflaison, archaic Romanian umflăciune.
