From Middle Irish éirgid (compare Irish éirigh, Scottish Gaelic èirich), from Old Irish at·reig (“rises”), from Proto-Celtic *regeti (“to stretch, straighten”), form Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (“to straighten”).
