Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic избити (izbiti), from из- (iz-) +‎ бити (biti), from Proto-Slavic *biti (to beat), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeyH-. Compare Serbo-Croatian izbiti and Russian избить (izbitʹ).
