From Ottoman Turkish كوف (küf), from Proto-Turkic *kebü- (“rot, dandruff”). Cognate with Karakhanid كڨژ (küviǯ, “rotten heartwood”), Kipchak [script needed] (küf, “mold”),[1] etc.
