Etymology[edit]
From Ottoman Turkish كبریتجی (kibritci, “matchmaker”), equivalent to kibrit (“sulfur; match”) + -çi.

kibritçi (definite accusative kibritçiyi, plural kibritçiler)
- matchmaker, a person who makes matchsticks
- (figuratively) miser, scrooge, someone with an excessive dislike of spending money
- (figuratively) scruff, someone with an untidy appearance
