Etymology

[edit]

Cognate of Norwegian laue, løya, løje, Danish løjer. Doublet of låga. See also Ancient Greek λευκός (leukós) as the name of a holy fish attested in the ode to Berenice by Theocritus ([1]).

The name is due to the silvery flashes from the sides of the fish at its turns in the water. Compare etymologies for braxen and id.
