From Proto-Inuit *napar- (tree, mountain ash), from Proto-Eskimo *Napar (tree). Compare Inuktitut napaaqtuq (tree), Inupiaq napaaqtuq (black spruce), Inuvialuktun napaaqtuq (tree).
