Middle High German nasewīse, by surface analysis, Nase + weis, originally of tracking dogs, transferred sense similar to nosy (“meddlesome”).

Usage notes[edit]
- The word suggests endearment when said about a child. Otherwise it may have a more negative tone and tend towards besserwisserisch (“know-all, smart aleck”).
