From an Old Northern French variant of Old French noce, noces, from Vulgar Latin *noptiās, an alteration of Latin nuptiās, from nupta (“bride, wife”), perfect participle of nūbō, nūbere (“marry, wed”), from Proto-Indo-European *snewbʰo- (“to marry, to wed”). Compare French noces.
