Etymology

[edit]

From nuage +‎ -er

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • Audio:(file)

IPA(key): /nɥa.ʒe/

Verb

[edit]

nuager

  1. to cover with clouds
    • Rétif de La Bretonne, La mimographie, Éd. Changuion, Amsterdam, 1770
Il est venu m'embrasser, avec un front nuagé, de cet air embarrassément fier, qui semble dire aux gens : je boude, de peur d'être grondé.

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written nuage- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling-change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
