Borrowed from Ancient Greek ὀπισθόδομος (opisthódomos, “back room”), from ὄπισθεν (ópisthen) + δόμος (dómos).

  1. (Greek architecture) A porch at the rear of a temple, set against the blank back wall of the cella.
