Reconstructed as asrama +‎ peng- -an, from Javanese pasraman (ꦥꦱꦿꦩꦤ꧀ (pasraman), monastery, hermitage), from Old Javanese pāśraman (hermitage). Cognate of Balinese pasrama (boarding-house).
