• from cūnctor (this appears semantically unconvincing and more likely simply influenced by it, as in the Vulgar Latin derivative below, but compare Japanese 掛ける); (Can this⁽⁺⁾ etymology be sourced?)
• from Proto-Indo-European *preḱ- (“to ask”).
