Finnish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *peeli, from Proto-Uralic *päle (“side”). Cognates include Estonian peel, Erzya пель (peľ), Moksha пяль (päľ) and Hungarian fél.[1] Compare also Hungarian ajtófél, its second element of which might originate from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pele, *pēle (“column, stang”)[2] (if not the same as the aforementioned root).
