Tagalog[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Malay pedih (smarting pain) +‎ Malay hati (emotions, literally liver), meaning "heartache", or literally “smarting liver”. Compare Javanese ꦥꦿꦶꦲꦠꦶꦤ꧀ (prihatin), and Malay pedih hati, as well as Tagalog dalamhati, luwalhati, ulohati, lunggati, and salaghati. An alternate etymology posits it to be from a contracted blend of lupig +‎ hati (emotions, literally liver).
