From Middle Dutch schipbrēke, scipbrāke, scipbrēkinghe, scipbrōkinghe, equivalent to schip (“ship”) + breuk (“break, fracture”). Cognate with Middle Low German schipbrōke (“shipwreck”), Old English scipbroc, scipġebroc (“shipwreck”). More at shipbreach.
