Borrowed from English squirrel, from Middle English squirel, from Anglo-Norman esquirel and Old French escurel, from a Vulgar Latin development of Latin sciūrus, ultimately from Ancient Greek σκίουρος (skíouros). Doublet of skojjattlu.
