Etymology

[edit]

Orel derives it from Proto-Slavic *stъrviti (to bait, to lure, to train); compare Bulgarian стръвя (strǎvja) < стръв (strǎv, bait).[1] Topalli instead considers it a prefixed form of vit (year), initially used for livestock that take up certain tasks once they reach one year of age.[2]
