Etymology

[edit]

Either inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taŋgap (accept) or borrowed from Malay tangkap (gripping; clasping; capture by the hand), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *taŋkəp (catch, as by covering). The two etymology sources may be equivalent. Compare Kapampangan tanggap (accept), Maranao tangkap (accept), and Balinese tanggap (take into hand).
