Etymology

From obsolete tapissieren, borrowed in the 16th century from Middle French tapisser, a derivative of Old French tapiz, from Ancient Greek ταπήτιον (tapḗtion). The modern German form under influence of the somewhat older noun Tapete and possibly Italian tappezzare.
