Etymology

[edit]

From earlier vendel (the present form with -aa- is likely influenced by vaan), likely an earlier borrowing from Middle High German venel, diminutive (with umlaut) of vane (German Fahne). By surface analysis, vaan +‎ -el, with epenthetic -d- (compare Dutch daalder).
