Etymology[edit]
Derived from German werben, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *hwerbaną (“to turn; to move; to change”). Compare Dutch werven (“to recruit”), English wharve (“to turn over”), Swedish värva (“to recruit”), Russian вербова́ть (verbovátʹ, “to recruit, enlist”), Polish werbować (“to recruit, enroll”).
