From Proto-West Germanic *wlaitōn, from Proto-Germanic *wlaitōną (“to see, look”), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (“to see”). Cognate with Old Norse leita (“to look for, seek”). Related to Old English wlītan (“to gaze, observe”), wlite (“appearance, form, aspect”).
