[edit]From Brythonic, related to Cornish skaw, Middle Breton scau, modern Breton skav, but of unknown ultimate origin. Possibly related to Proto-Celtic *skātu (“shadow”), which gave the similar Middle Welsh ysgawd (“shade”).[1][2]
