Azerbaijani

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Persian سنگین (sangin, heavy), possibly via Ottoman Turkish زنگین (zengin). /s//z/ has been a frequent sound shift in specific dialects descending from Old Anatolian Turkish, often obfuscated by conservative Arabic-script spellings. Compare Azerbaijani ziyil (cf. Turkish siğil), zopa (cf. Turkish sopa), and zindan (anvil) which also underwent this irregular initial voicing. Doublet of səngin.
