From Proto-Slavic *dьržati, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰer- (to hold, support); cognate with Upper Sorbian dźeržeć, Polish dzierżyć, Czech držet, Russian держа́ть (deržátʹ), Old Church Slavonic дрьжати (drĭžati).
