From Ancient Greek ᾰ̓νᾰκρούω (push back). Sense 1 since Hellenistic times. Morphologically, from ανα- +‎ κρούω (strike).

  1. (music) to strike up, play (especially a rousing piece)

  2. (less common, used in active voice) to back off, back out
