Pronunciation

[edit]

Proper noun

[edit]

Шымке́нт (Šymkéntm inan (genitive Шымке́нта, relational adjective шымке́нтский)

  1. Shymkent
    Он в Шымке́нт е́дет на по́езде.
On v Šymként jédet na pójezde.

Usage notes

[edit]

The modern standard form Шымке́нт (Šymként), borrowed directly from Kazakh, goes against the rules of Russian orthography, which state that the sound IPA(key): [ɨ] should always be written with the letter и (i) if it follows ш (š) or ж (ž). For this reason, Russian-language media outside of Kazakhstan prefer to use the older form Чимке́нт (Čimként).
