From Proto-Uralic *warᴈ. Cognates include Moksha варси (varśi), Finnish varis, Livonian vaŗīkš, Inari Sami vuorâš, Hungarian varjú. Ultimately onomatopoeic. Compare Proto-Balto-Slavic *wárˀnāˀ.
