Bulgarian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *koristь, originally meaning loot, award (from a conquest). Compare Old Church Slavonic користь (koristĭ, loot, booty, award). Likely a deverbal noun from коря́ (korjá, to reproach, to objurgate) +‎ -ист (-ist). Alternatively, may reflect ко- (ko-, such that) +‎ ри́стя (rístja, to hunt, to chase) (dialectal) + () (i-stem).
