Etymology

[edit]

From либера́л (liberál), likely modeled after пидора́ха (pidoráxa), a derogatory term for a Russian patriot who is perceived as chauvinistic and hateful.

The suffix -а́ха (-áxa) was an old-fashioned derogatory suffix, perhaps derived from -шка (-ška); see also дурёха (durjóxa, a foolish woman), Илю́ха (Iljúxa, little Elijah) (from Илья), and Танюха (Tanjuxa, little Tatiana) (from Татьяна) as examples of the suffix.
