Inherited from Proto-Slavic *paziti. Cognate with Bulgarian пазя (pazja, to safeguard), Slovene paziti (protect), Ukrainian пазити (pazyty, to look after). Non-Slavic cognates include Old Norse spakr (wise), speki (wisdom), spekja (to soothe). Compare Latin speciō (to watch).
