Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic тъщета (tŭšteta), from Proto-Slavic *tъščeta, a derivative of *tъščь (whence то́щий (tóščij)) + *-ota.

Further back, from Proto-Indo-European *tweskʷ- (desert, barren). Compare Sanskrit तुच्छ (tuccha, empty, vain), Latin tesqua (desert).
