Inherited from Old East Slavic ямьщикъ (jamĭščikŭ), from Turkic. Compare Tatar ямчы (yamçı), Turkish yamçı. Ultimately from Middle Mongol ᠵᠠᠮᠴᠢ (ǰamči). Ending modified under the influence of -щик (-ščik).
