Etymology

An Iranian borrowing, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *taš- (to make, construct; to cut), from Proto-Indo-European *tetḱ-. Compare Middle Persian tʾšytn' (tāšīdan, to cut, to cleave; to create), Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬌 𐬙𐬁𐬱𐬙𐬌 (auui tāšti, to make, produce as carpenter), Persian تش (taš, hatchet, axe), Sanskrit तक्षति (tákṣati).
