From earlier بازارگان (bâzârgân), from Middle Persian wʾčʾlkʾn' (wāzāragān, merchant). Compare Old Armenian վաճառական (vačaṙakan). Analyzable as بازار (bâzâr, bazaar) +‎ ـگان (gân).
