Etymology

From جَبَل سِنْجَار (jabal sinjār, Sinjar Mountain Range), from Ancient Greek Σίγγαρα (Síngara), ultimately from Sumerian 𒆠𒂗𒄀𒊏 (ki-en-gi-ra, of the Sumerians, literally place in possession of noble lords); cognates with Hebrew שִׁנְעָר (šinʿar), Hittite 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (šanhar), Egyptian sngr (sanhar, sankhar, Babylonia), possibly also derived as variations of Akkadian 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (šumerû).
