The noun عَلَف (ʕalaf, “fodder”) is the most-frequent word of this root and, apparently its singular origin, hails from a form within the root ء ل ف (ʔ-l-f) such as أَلِفَ (ʔalifa, “to start to like said about animals near their nourishment”) etc. as quoted there.
