Etymology

[edit]

From ماه (mâh, moon, month) +‎ ـین (-in, relative suffix).
From Middle Persian 𐭡𐭩𐭥𐭧 (byʿḥ /māh/), from Old Persian 𐎶𐎠𐏃 (m-a-h /māha/), from Proto-Iranian *mā́Hah, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mā́Has, from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s (moon, month), probably from *meh₁- (to measure). Compare Sanskrit मासीन (māsīna, monthly, one month old, of a month, adjective).[1]
