Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܡܵܪܝ (mār, literally My lord). The original, Classical meaning of “My lord” is not felt and this word is only used as a title for saints. Corresponds to ܡܵܪܝܼ mārī, “My lord”.
