Etymology

From Aramaic תְּמָנֵעְסַר (təmāneʿəsar). Equivalent to ܬܡܵܢܝܵܐ (tmānyā, eight) +‎ ܥܸܣܪܵܐ (ʿisrā, ten); compare Arabic ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ (ṯamāniyata ʕašara) and Hebrew שְׁמוֹנָה עָשָׂר (sh'moná 'asár).
